  • Accelerated English

An interactive multimedia language program, the Accelerated English series is designed for adults and the higher grades of secondary school, particularly those advanced students preparing for studies in English-medium schools and colleges and taking the TOEFL or other international ESL/EFL tests. Users are challenged by sophisticated listening and reading comprehension, dictation, and advanced usage and structure activities made more accessible and meaningful by the dramatic contents of each scene or section in the story. Each CD in the series can be used for 20 - 40 hours of self-paced learning sessions.

Accelerated English stresses acquisition through a content-rich environment of clear and imaginative graphics and CD-quality sound recorded by professional talent. Its format is based on the Accelerated Learning approach developed by Georgi Lozanov: a high density of new words and complex structures in early units are presented in clear contexts, and an exciting storyline is treated in such a way as to express positive values for the student. This allows the student to absorb and learn from material that might be too difficult in conventional contexts. Other features include: written text for listening that can be switched on and off the screen on command; adjustable pause length in speech; the ability to repeat or access any segment on demand; a glossary that is available at any time; more complex versions of activities being presented upon success in previous ones; full control over sequences of activity type (to accommodate different learning styles); and feedback summary of success within each unit provided to the student at the end of each session.

Each disk of the series contains four or five scenes that develop into a TV-style drama covering the first few months of an international student's time attending a university in the U.S. Besides covering issues such as culture shock or socialization of new arrivals in a community, the drama has universal appeal in its positive treatment of both peer and intergenerational relationships which span the diverse cultures of the U.S. And as in any drama, there is suspense or mystery based upon situations that are not resolved fully until later in the story. Each scene from the drama and each section of supplementary material has an extensive set of activities for the student to develop both basic English skills and special academic study skills such as reading graphs or summarizing points in an argument. These activities include listening comprehension, dictation, sentence editing (modeled directly on the structure section of the TOEFL), and What's Next, an exercise in which sample sequences of dialogue are presented and the student chooses from a series of options which utterance continues the sequence. These CD-ROMS run on DOS and Windows.

    Active English

A four-part course for building communicative listening proficiency in ESL or EFL, Active English is oriented toward secondary school students but is also appropriate for college and adult learners. Through presentations and accompanying exercises, students have extensive opportunities for interactive listening. The presentations--Dialogues, Stories, and Lectures--are designed to be interesting and informative so that the focus becomes the content rather than the language itself. The focus is on language for social interaction as well as on academic and content area language. Active English is centered on a fictitious high school in Washington, D.C. Students follow the lives of several teachers and students, both in and out of class during the year. Classroom presentations provide a logical medium for the highly content-based approach of the series.

A special feature of Active English is a presentation by a real-world guest speaker on each disc. Norm Sonju, General Manager of the Dallas Mavericks, gives a talk on sports in Active English I. TV meteorologist Janice Huff presents a lecture on Weather and Climate in Active English II. In Active English III, students receive a talk on the future of science and technology from CNN Science Reporter Craig Heaps. Active English IV includes a talk on preparing for a career in high technology given by Dr. Samuel Ferguson, Human Resource Director at Applied Materials Corporation, the world's leading semi-conductor equipment manufacturer.

Active English not only helps students acquire new language forms, it also provides a rich environment for increasing the student's ability to process spoken language in real time. The language is presented at a natural speed and includes the contractions and other reductions students hear from speakers outside the classroom. This series also helps to add useful words to the student's vocabulary, words which are presented in context with supporting graphics and defined in a glossary.
Other user-controlled features available to facilitate comprehension include: a written text version of the spoken forms that can be switched on and off; adjustable pause length between sentences--from 0 up to 3 seconds; a glossary available on demand; and the ability to repeat the current segment, words, phrase, or sentence as many times as desired. In addition, the program automatically adapts to the students, presenting more challenging variants of the material as questions are answered successfully. The difficulty level can be set manually by either the user or the instructor, and the activities can be selected in any sequence according to the user's own interests and preferred learning style. Records available during and at the end of each session can be used by the student to chart his or her own progress.

Each of the four CDs contains three lessons with up to six interactive activities in each lesson. The first three activities in the lesson introduce new material through dialogues or a lecture. The last three recycle that material for further practice. Exercises include comprehension checks, dictation, gap fill-ins, and What's Next, an activity in which sample sequences of dialogue are presented to the students, who must then choose from a series of sentences which one continues the conversation. Also available is a new Activities package, containing four CDs of supplementary exercises and activities. These CD-ROMs run on DOS and Windows.

    Dynamic English

    NOW WITH SPEECH RECOGNITION!

Created by experienced teachers and supported by the latest theories of language acquisition, Dynamic English is a three-level introductory course in spoken English. Adopted for use in EFL/ESL/LEP classrooms around the world, Dynamic English also has the distinction of being chosen for use in national teacher training programs as a model for effective use of multimedia in language teaching.

Dynamic English maximizes the effectiveness of multimedia by focusing on the primary skill necessary to learn any language: listening. Through a listening approach, vocabulary and basic grammatical structures are presented in a carefully sequenced syllabus that balances both communicative and linguistic needs. Students progress from a basic ability to talk about themselves to talking about the world around them. Speaking and reading tasks provide secondary support for listening and serve to engage the learner in a wide variety of activities. Interest is maintained by language and themes directly related to the needs and interests of today's students of English. Units include such topics as Names and Places, Jobs and Family, Numbers and Time, Likes and Dislikes, Planning Ahead, Energy Sources, Directions, and Our World.

The key features of Dynamic English include: effective sequencing that results in long-term learning; high interactivity and depth that provides intensive practice opportunities for skill development; full-color, high-resolution graphics that contextualize the language and enhance effective language input; speech record/playback capability that promotes speaking and pronunciation practice, as well as listening accuracy; instant access to comprehension aids and glossary support, which reduces frustration and helps to motivate students; and high-quality audio that provides clear speech models for repetition and record/playback practice.

Level One is suitable for both beginners and false beginners needing remedial work. Levels Two and Three take students to a high-beginner/pre-intermediate level of competency and can be supplemented with Dynamic Classics. The depth and flexibility of the course allows for its effective use with other course books and materials. Each level consists of 2 CD-ROMs and a detailed Instructor's Manual to assist teachers.

Dynamic English is available in versions with native language audio support in Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Italian, and French. It is also available in an English-only version for multilingual classrooms. Please specify your version preference when ordering. These CD-ROMs run on both Macintosh and DOS.

    English Vocabulary

A set of six CD-ROM courses, the English Vocabulary program is designed to build the advanced beginner's knowledge of high-frequency words, such as those used at home, at school, and when shopping. Each CD includes approximately 70 graphic/sound supported vocabulary words, and some 200 additional words from accompanying texts. The lessons within each activity are colorful, entertaining, cognitively stimulating, and appropriate for students of all ages. They motivate students to maintain a high level of attention and enthusiasm for learning English.

English Vocabulary focuses on developing listening skills and vocabulary. The program introduces students to new vocabulary contextually. This basic approach, coupled with colorful graphics and CD-quality sound, enables students to interact with the language as they might in a natural environment and to improve listening comprehension skills while they increase their vocabulary. Using a topic-based approach, each part of the program explores subjects which interest language learners. The CD-quality sound renders clear, authentic speech, while the interactive activities are visually appealing, cognitively stimulating, and entertaining--all of which keep users engaged with the topic. Students are encouraged to practice speaking, using either the "listen and repeat" option, where they may record their voices for pronunciation practice, or the "pause" and "repeat" controls, which enable them to practice speaking without the recording feature.

English Vocabulary is student-centered. As students progress and demonstrate an understanding of simpler sentence forms, the grammatical complexity of accompanying sentences increases. Thus, the program provides for multi-level students as well as increasing developmental levels as the learner progresses. Students can also adjust the linguistic difficulty of the language presented.

The six program discs may be used individually or in any order; they are entirely self-contained. The main menu for each course divides the material into two sections: Presentation, which gives the content of the course, and Exercises, which review the material given in the Presentation. The presentations within each disc contain scenes that illustrate the vocabulary words and provide an environment for students to practice what they learned. Students can also choose activities and games that help them to apply what they learned. Each disc contains dictation exercises; gap fill-ins; Simon Says, a game in which students perform tasks according to the directions of Simon; and What Am I?, another game in which students are presented with a three-by-three grid with nine graphic descriptions, given one by one. As they guess the correct vocabulary word, the graphic disappears to reveal a part of a larger picture beneath. The whole picture is revealed when the last question is answered. In each of the activities and games, students can keep playing as long as they wish.

The English Vocabulary program is easy to use and intuitive to operate. No keyboarding experience is required, since everything is accessed by pointing and clicking with the mouse. The controls are the same for every lesson. Four basic types of help are available to the student: (1) a repeat button that the student can click on to have any sentence repeated, (2) text corresponding to the audio that may be viewed when desired, (3) highlighted words in the text that the student can click on to view their definitions, and (4) a glossary that may be accessed at any time. In addition, when students interact with the course and answer questions, they receive feedback appropriate to their answers. Yes/no and true/false questions receive an affirmation that the student's answer was right, or a clarification if his or her answer was wrong. If the question requires more than a yes/no or true/false answer, the feedback not only indicates whether the student is right or wrong, but often gives students a hint about the answer. Most often, whether the student gives the right or wrong answer, they receive an explanation of why the correct answer is right, which reinforces their understanding of the answer. These CD-ROMs run on both Macintosh and Windows.

    Functioning in Business

Featuring MPEG full-motion video on CD-ROM, this video-based course brings intermediate-level business-oriented English students directly into mainstream workday action. Through the story of a foreign executive's trip to the U.S.A., Functioning in Business targets critical aspects of dealing successfully with international business English.

Based on the popular textbook, Functioning in Business, published by Longman, this course focuses on practical language functions common in the business world, such as requesting, refusing, suggesting, and confirming. Inform

A two-part interactive MacEnglish program designed to develop listening and speaking skills for advanced beginner ESL students, Inform introduces language around six basic themes in American culture which students find useful and interesting: Daily Living, Culture & Custom, and At Work (Inform I), and Entertainment, Sports & Leisure, and Travel (Inform II). The complete program provides about 100 hours of interactive work in 36 lessons for either an individual or lab setting. Within each lesson, students first listen to a brief presentation about an interesting theme and can then go back and hear the presentation again sentence by sentence, repeating as many times as they like. In the follow-up conversation section, students listen to a dialogue around the same theme. The record/playback feature allows students to record their own voice and then compare their speech with that of a narrating native speaker. Individual target vocabulary words can also be practiced, recorded, and compared to the program voice through an instantly generated individual voice graph. Students are presented with the challenge of seeing how close they can match their own pronunciation to that of the native speaker. Students will enjoy this exciting, interesting new way to improve their English language skills by working simply and easily with a computer, while teachers will appreciate the value of the self-paced, intensive listening and speaking practice which provides an excellent supplement to core classroom instruction. Supporting Instructor's Guides and reproducible Student Workbooks are available for each disc. These CD-ROMs run on Macintosh.

See It, Hear It, SAY IT!

Using programming developed at Stanford University's Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI) along with a new speech recognition system developed by IBM Corporation, See It, Hear It, SAY IT! is the first English language instructional program with speech recognition in all program activities. Using photographs, graphics, audio, and the latest in speech recognition technology to teach the meaning and pronunciation of target words, this program is a revolutionary leap forward in computer-based language learning. A unique Quasi-random, Double Bias Selection System © developed by Courseware Publishing International selects target words in a manner which accelerates the learning of high frequency and important words, while giving the student additional practice with words he or she finds difficult. See It, Hear It, SAY IT! teaches more than 500 words for beginning through intermediate level students to use in everyday contexts at home, work, or school. Pronunciation of additional words is taught in the Difficult Pairs activity. Because the program emphasizes successful pronunciation, students can immediately start using the words in their everyday lives with confidence that they will be understood by English speakers.

A single CD-ROM provides more than 50 hours of self-paced interactive instruction and practice. User-support is provided through voice-activated help screens and a guided tour through program operations. In addition, the program can be customized to allow students to operate at their preferred level of challenge and comfort. For example, either male or female voices can be selected for the pronunciation models; the vocabulary level, or point of entry into the practice set, can be raised to allow a higher level of difficulty than in previous sessions; the "rebound rate," or number of new words being practiced at one time, can be increased or decreased; response time can be set for individual preference and comfort by using the "interaction speed" adjustment on the control panel; and the "fudge factor," or level of pronunciation accuracy required by the program, can be adjusted so that students can move towards better pronunciation at their own pace, without frustration.

The main menu divides the material into two sections; both sections present two sets of 125 plus words each, along with three Activities. Each of these presentation sets teaches its 125 or more new words in two modes: Repetition and Recall, both including a reward/feedback system. The three Activities provide practice of the words presented in an entertaining and engaging format. What Is It? challenges and enhances each student's understanding of the picture/word combinations from the presentations. Four pictures are shown on the screen as the student hears a sentence or question relating to one of the pictures, and the students must then select the correct picture and say the target word for that picture into the microphone. In Don't Hang 'Em!, spelling practice is provided through a variation of the traditional Hangman game. The phonetic (word) alphabet (i.e., Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.) is also taught. Students can obtain clues from the computer. When a word is spelled correctly before an effigy is hung, the program continues with a new words, and the student is given a number of points, depending on the number of wrong letters selected. Scoring is cumulative, and a record of the top five scores is kept. This motivates users to continue the activity and to improve their ability to spell the words learned earlier in the program. The third activity, Difficult Pairs, is a traditional pronunciation exercise designed to help students to discriminate closely related English sounds. At the first level, the students see two words, such as rice and lice. They say whichever of the words they wish and program highlights the word it hears. Students continue until they can consistently have the program recognize the word in the pair that they are attempting to say. In the second level, the word pairs appear on the screen, and the user must clearly say the word highlighted in red. This CD-ROM runs on Windows 3.1 and Windows `95.
